Measure your patio design. Lay it with string and stakes.

Excavate the ground within the patio layout. Remove all grass, rocks, debris and at least 6 inches of dirt. Make the excavated ground as level as possible so that your patio will be leveled. If your garden patio is adjacent to your home, make a slope gradually away from the house by excavating ¼ inch deep every three to four feet as you move away from the house.

Add crushed gravel (about 5 inches) to the excavated surface. With a rake, scratch  the gravel and make it leveled. Press the gravel with a plate compactor until it is snuggled together.

Lay the slabs according to your design. Leave ½ inch between the stones like a mortar line. You might have to cut stones in order to fit the pattern you’ve designed. Cut the natural stone with a masonry blade.
