Prepare the patio bed. Determine the shape and the size of the patio. Make sure that there is enough space for all the pavers. Once you lay your patio, dig an area equal to the patio size using a shovel and mattock. Make the depth 5 1/2 inches.

Cut a piece of landscape fabric. Make sure that the landscape fabric is large enough to cover the patio. Prepare many pieces of fabric that you think is enough for your planned patio size.

Lay a 2 x 6 adjacent to your house. Cut the wood until it is where you want the patio edge to be. Use string guides for alignment. Nail the stake to the board.

Make the frame. Corners should overlap. Use the triangulation method to make it a perfect square.

Add gravel and level it. Place a piece of expansion-joint material between the patio and house. Pour gravel of about one inch thick. Make a screed with a short section of 1×4 or other scrap lumber. Scrape the gravel until it is level from side to side.
